Comeback Daniil Medvedev Wins First Trophy in Over Two Years
Nineteen of Daniil Medvedev's twenty-one championships have been won on hardcourt
A comeback the Russian player claimed his first title for over two years with victory over opponent Moutet in the competition title decider.
Medvedev, a former world number one, has experienced a challenging period, achieving just one match at the big events and suffering a setback at the New York tournament.
Medvedev's unpredictability on the ATP Tour - and issues with his service game in especial - caused him falling of the world's top 10 and ultimately parting ways with former trainer Gilles Cervara.
Currently training with Johansson and Goetzke, the tennis star has gradually improved in the last few weeks - culminating in a hard-fought three-set victory over challenger Corentin Moutet.
It is Medvedev's first trophy since the Italian tournament and first on a hardcourt from March of that year.
Success also indicates he has secured twenty-one championships at twenty-one different tournaments.
"It's the first time I have attended a tournament with my two daughters at once, so to win a title is particularly special," commented world number 14 Daniil Medvedev.
"This title is in dedication of my second daughter Victoria, because the initial championship I got when my first daughter her name was delivered was for her."
The athlete, the 2021 US Open champion, had failed in his previous six title deciders, including in the German tournament earlier this year.
His retrieving play style and regular reactions on court had led commentators to question if his capacity to compete at the elite level was finished.
However the player has implemented adjustments in the last few weeks, attempting to approach the net and compete aggressively, supported by an enhanced service.
Medvedev came back from a deficit in the first set against the tricky Frenchman, winning 4 of the concluding five points to go ahead.
The pair traded service breaks in the middle set before the challenger, striving for his maiden tour title, seized the initiative to create a final set.
Moutet saved four initial break points in a competitive final set before Medvedev won the break to fifteen to serve for the match.
Appropriately, the winner secured the title with a rally at the front of the court, with his opponent unable to handle a shot after two hours and 38 minutes.
