Minister Confirms Ministry of Defence Examining Security Risk from Vehicles from China, with Staff Instructed to Avoid Confidential Discussions in Cars.

An defense official has revealed that the MoD is currently investigating the potential threats associated with Chinese-made vehicles, while personnel have been told to refrain from talking about classified information in any vehicles.

Security Guidance for Defence Personnel

In a recently aired appearance on a radio station, a defence minister addressed reports that Ministry of Defence staff have been told not to talk about classified information while riding in Chinese cars.

He said that the MoD is “investigating” cars from China within its fleets, however emphasised that safety is a concern in all contemporary vehicles.

Our department has a collection of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug Ministry of Defence devices into their car, to avoid having discussions at a classified classification in any kind of vehicle, because of the increasing risks of surveillance that are present in every single vehicle, to restrict those confidential talks in protected areas. That’s a prudent and sensible thing for anyone concerned about security.

After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the ministry to cease using every cars from China, the minister replied: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”

Wider Security Background

This announcement comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made electric buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable public transport and cause disruption to public transit.

Furthermore, a Russian spy ship was reportedly directing lasers at Royal Air Force pilots, described as a “extremely risky” action by defence officials.

The broader security situation highlights the importance of robust protocols and vigilance in all areas of government operations, from vehicle use to discussions practices.
