The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Key Part in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in Perth.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of being involved.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and there are permutations at play, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of several home seasons in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the contest.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
