This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Consider this a test for long-term couples who are fans of scary movies: Settle in with your partner and view Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. On the surface, it might appear like typical body horror, but within Together exists a intense examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the actors bring a particular energy to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The plot begins when Tim and Millie transition from the metropolis to the rural area for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical story element, sure, but that’s primarily where the conventions end. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their new home, a storm hits, and the protagonists tumble into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the pair. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The whole movie is a methodically building of scares, blending bits of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is amplified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Both characters face the sort of issues that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama work together symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that single viewers have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the finale inspire anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can embark on right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
