Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the option to contest certain calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the practice already in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development follows just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review other decisions, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
